The Sydney Observatory Day Program offers an immersive STEM experience where students explore astronomy, space science, and the tools scientists use to study the universe. During the session, learners observe the Sun safely through a solar telescope, examine meteorites, explore models of the Solar System, and learn how astronomers interpret light, motion, and time. The program is highly interactive and designed for school‑aged groups, making it ideal for homeschoolers seeking a structured, curriculum‑aligned excursion. The Observatory’s historic site also adds cultural and scientific context, enriching the learning experience.Date: Ongoing — available on weekdays during school term (booked by request) Time: 60–90 minutes (confirmed upon booking)
Science
For Stages 1–4 (Years 1–10), this activity supports Science outcomes by enabling students to observe the Sun, Moon, planets, and other celestial objects, and understand Earth’s place in the Solar System (ST1‑10ES‑S, ST2‑10ES‑S, ST3‑10ES‑S, SC4‑12ES). Students develop inquiry and scientific investigation skills through hands‑on exploration of telescopes, models, and meteorites (ST1‑1WS‑S, ST2‑1WS‑S, ST3‑1WS‑S). The program also strengthens understanding of light, energy, and observable changes in the sky (ST3‑6PW‑S, SC4‑9PW). Links to History arise through learning about early navigation, timekeeping, and the Observatory’s role in Australia’s scientific development (HT2‑2, HT3‑2). Together, these outcomes build scientific literacy, curiosity, and conceptual understanding of Earth and space.
